On January 10th, 2025, students of the Bachelor’s course “Fundamentals in Forming Technology” visited the thyssenkrupp plant in Duisburg and gained insights into the production and processing of steel - from raw materials to sheets. The plant in Duisburg produces approximately 12 million tons of steel annually. During the excursion, students were not only introduced to the classic blast furnace processes, but also to the pioneering process of direct reduction with hydrogen, which thyssenkrupp plans to implement by 2045 in order to significantly reduce the CO2 emissions. The excursion gave the students valuable insights that went beyond the lecture hall and offered an important addition to the theory by allowing them to experience the processes and challenges of steel production first-hand.
