During the internship, Zeynep worked on the experimental and numerical investigation of the 34MnB5 tubes in the TRR188 T04 project, which focuses on the radial forging of automotive gear shafts. The aim of the internship was to characterize the initial material and investigate the deformation behaviour under uniaxial tensile loading.
Firstly, she studied the microstructure of the 34MnB5 material and identified its main microstructural features such as ferrite, pearlite and TiN inclusions. Then, she analysed the results of uniaxial tensile test until fracture. In addition, the experimental force-displacement data were analysed to identify crucial points such as yield point, ultimate tensile strength and fracture point. Because the uniaxial tensile test does not provide sufficient data at higher plastic strains relevant to radial forging, flow curve extrapolation was investigated. Therefore, in order to extrapolate the experimental test results, two main approaches were used which were swift, voce and a combination of swift-voce extrapolation methods. The yield point elongation phenomenon was used in the flow curve data to correctly predict the force displacement curve during the onset of plasticity. After the ultimate tensile strength point, the Swift extrapolation curve performed better than voce extrapolation due to the exponential growth in the hardening behaviour. Abaqus explicit dynamic simulations were used to numerically simulate the force-displacement data.
We are very pleased to host such enthusiastic and talented students. Beyond the technical exchanges, this exposure to diverse cultures benefits everyone involved.
