As part of the SchnupperUni 2025, upper secondary school students immersed themselves in university life and gained insights into current research topics. The IUL, as part of the faculty of mechanical engineering, offered a glimpse into studying mechanical engineering and presented an interactive lecture titled “The Car form a Can”, demonstrating how fundamental research in forming technology can contribute to achieving current climate goals by making aluminum recycling more efficient. During the lecture, students followed the journey from raw ore to an aluminium component produced through forming processes. A particular focus was placed on the aluminum recycling process and how modifying conventional forming methods, such as chip extrusion, cann allow direct reuse of production waste like aluminum chips. This approach significantly reduces energy use, material consumption and CO2 emissions compared to traditional methods. Various in-situ experiments invited the pupils to experience science up close. The event concluded with a live demonstration of chip extrusion in the IUL´s experimental facilities.
