The IUL welcomed Dr. Shiori Gondo on March 29 and 30, 2023 for a first visit of her soon-to-be research institution. Beginning July 1 of this year, she will spend two years in the Institute's Non-Conventional Processes Department working in the field of incremental forming on the development of a new process route for manufacturing components with better performance that can provide both materials and manufacturing scientists with a better understanding of the combination of void formation and forming. This promising interdisciplinary project is a unique combination of knowledge of incremental forming and a view from a microstructure perspective. The goal is to develop a damage control technology that can be applied to various processes.

Dr. Gondo received her PhD from the prestigious Waseda University in 2019 and subsequently worked in the materials processing group of the Advanced Manufacturing Research Institute at the National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology (AIST) in Tsukuba, Japan. She was accepted for her Alexander von Humboldt Fellowship last December. Currently, she is completing a German language course offered by the Foundation.

Doctoral candidates of above-average talent from all nations and different disciplines whose doctorate was awarded no more than four years ago can apply for an Alexander von Humboldt Fellowship. The fellowship gives postdoctoral researchers the opportunity to carry out a long-term research project of their own choice lasting between 6 and 24 months in cooperation with an academic host at a research institution in Germany. Worldwide, 500 Humboldt Research Fellowships for postdoctoral researchers are awarded annually.
