Visit of Prof. Dr. Akinori Yamanaka Hosted by the IUL at TU Dortmund University

The visit included interdisciplinary scientific exchange with colleagues from the Chair of Reliability Engineering (CRE) and the Institute of Mechanics (IM), in addition to a full afternoon program at the IUL.
A highlight of the visit was Prof. Yamanaka’s guest lecture titled: “Bayesian Data Assimilation Methods to Develop Material Digital Twins of Microstructure Evolution, Deformation and Fracture of Materials”
In his talk, Prof. Yamanaka presented recent research on integrating experimental data (such as 4D X-ray CT, EBSD, and full-field strain measurements) into phase-field simulations of microstructural evolution and crack propagation. He also demonstrated the use of Bayesian data assimilation in finite element simulations for inverse estimation of constitutive model parameters. His lecture showcased how data-integrated digital twins can enhance predictive accuracy in materials engineering.
We thank Prof. Dr. Yamanaka for the inspiring visit and engaging discussions, and we look forward to future collaboration.
