Doctoral examination at the IUL

Professor Volk from the Chair of Metal Forming and Casting at TU Munich and Professor Tekkaya from the IUL reviewed the presentation. The examination was also attended by the chairman Prof. A. Zabel of the ISF and the examiner PD Dr. P. Kurzeja of the IM of TU Dortmund University. In his dissertation, Mr. Schmitz deals with high-speed shearing, which makes effective use of the resulting process heat in the form of thermal softening. In addition, a new methodology was developed to measure various energy variables during high-speed shearing. Using experimental, analytical, and numerical methods, a criterion was derived which makes it possible to differentiate high-speed shear cutting from conventional shear cutting on the basis of physical properties. This criterion can be used for process design as well as for process classification.
