As part of TU Dortmund’s MinTU program, a support program to increase the proportion of female students in STEM subjects, over 30 schoolgirls aged 12 to 14 had the opportunity to get to know mechanical engineering and production technology in detail. The main focus was on forming technology and material characterization. Once they had clearly understood and internalized the concepts of stress, strain, elasticity and plasticity, the pupils were able to create their own sample geometries, which were then laser-cut from a sheet of metal. In tensile tests, the students then determined the properties of their individual samples and were able to test their hypotheses, e.g. which sample had the highest elongation at break. In a subsequent tour of the experimental hall, the topic of press hardening was explained and demonstrated using live experiments.
